My Experience with Keto

I quasi started the Ketogenic diet in September of 2017.  It took about a month to understand what I needed to be doing.  What’s low calorie isn’t necessarily low carb – carrots, for instance. So I shied away from all vegetables for my first month or two. Then I decided to make green vegetables my carbs, and that’s been my plan since.

For those not familiar, a ketogenic diet is low carb, high fat and moderate protein. I used an app on my phone to religiously count the macros daily. Low carb for me was under 20 grams. A bowl of oatmeal has 23 grams, so that tells you how restrictive it is.

I cold-turkeyed sugar and all wheat products completely.

It took close to 6 months to lose 25 lbs.  To my advantage, I enjoy cooking. I did a lot of experimenting with different dishes. Some weeks were hits and some were misses.

I weighed myself daily. Some may say not to do that, but I won’t be convinced to stop doing it!

I didn’t get all caught up with the “getting into ketosis” thing. I simply assumed that my metabolism was working as planned because I followed the diet well. Some say that it’s not a restrictive diet, but I disagree. It’s the fact that it IS restrictive that makes it easier to follow.

There are some negative things to pay attention to. Muscle cramps are common.

I was a died-in-the-wool tea drinker, but started drinking bulletproof coffee in the morning. Started out with cream, butter and coconut oil and eventually purchased MTC oil to replace the coconut oil.

This is not how I want my long term diet to be. So after 5 months I transitioned back to my regular diet with an emphasis on Mediterranean. Lots of salads.  The sugar will remain a no-no-never!  I will bring some pasta and good seeded whole wheat breads back in; Oatmeal in the morning and an apple for a snack. Sweet potatoes – things like that.

So….I hit my 25lb goal for one day. The weight bounced up 1 to 2 lbs. I decided to go back on keto for a week with the hopes of getting 2-3 lbs below my goal weight, then go back to Mediterranean and just be careful.  For now, I’m 2 days into the week of keto.

Breakfast this morning was coffee with cream, a small avocado with lime juice, salt & pepper. Before leaving for work I downed a tbsp of MCT oil. Hopefully I can do this in a week. If not, I’m sure I’ll be perfectly ok with being 1-2 lbs over the goal.
